Matthew Sully Sullivan grew up in Virginia just outside of Washington DC. At an early age he was drawn to the music of Bruce Springsteen. “The first album I ever bought was Greetings From Asbury Park and my first rock concert was “The River Tour” at the Capital Center at the age of 14 years”. Sully played guitar as a teenager and with local bands after high school before receiving a scholarship to Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) where he graduated with honors. Sully received a Bachelors of Music in Jazz Studies and classical guitar and was fortunate to study for two of his 4 years with jazz legend Ellis Marsalis (Father of Wynton & Branford).
While in college and for several years following, Sully played guitar in the mid atlantic region of the US with many notable jazz performers such as John D’Earth (Bruce Hornsby), Bob Moses (Pat Metheny), Carter Beauford (Dave Matthews Band) LeRoi Moore (Dave Matthews Band), The Great American Music Ensemble at the Kennedy Center with Jon Faddis and Joe Kennedy Jr.
In the mid 90s Sully moved to Las Vegas, NV where he soon became a first call guitarist in the booming LV music scene. Sully worked in all the major showrooms with such acts as Cirque Du Soleil’s Ka, The Supremes, David Cassidy, Sheena Easton, Terry Fator, Don Rickles, American Pop, Lon Bronson Allstars, Tommy Aldridge, Legends In Concert, Jimmy Hopper, Clint Holmes, Susan Anton, Lorna Luft etc…..
In 2002 Sully wrote and produced all music and lyrics for the debut CD of his original rock band The Sullied. The release of The Sullied’s “Meltdown” CD was met with rave reviews. MuzikMan of Musicdish.com said “This is one of the best rock albums of the year”. The Sullied’s second CD “The Sullied” (which is still in pre-release) features rock infused with orchestral writing and is now available at http://www.TheSullied.com.
From 2003 to 2012 when Sully was not touring with Bruce In the USA he has been on the road with “Pop Idol” David Cassidy. Sully has had the fortune to play some of the greatest Venues in the world such as, Wembley Arena and The Hammersmith Apollo in London to the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas. He has also had the pleasure of playing many full size orchestra shows with David Cassidy.
Sully and Matt Ryan first met in 2003 while working in the show “American Pop” at the NY NY Casino. Playing the great songs of the Springsteen songbook rekindled Sully’s love for Bruce’s music. For the next year and a half, Sully and Ryan would work together off and on in the American Pop show as well as on the road for the production show Legends In Concert where sully functioned as guitarist and music director. In 2004 the American Pop band led by Jim Belk (Original Music Director for Bruce In the USA) joined forces to create the first edition of Bruce In the USA.
In 2004, Bruce In The USA opened at the Aladdin’s “V” theatre on the Las Vegas strip. Off the success of the show, Bruce In the USA was invited to play at the historic Stone Pony, the “Mecca” of all Bruce fans. This was a huge honor in that it is considered the back yard of Bruce Springsteen. Bruce In the USA was not only the first Bruce tribute act to play the Stone Pony, it was the first tribute act to ever play the Stone Pony. A short tour of the east coast was built around the Stone Pony show and off that success Bruce In The USA decided to pull up it’s stakes in Las Vegas and take the Show on the road, where it has remained to this day.
