The Wish
was recorded on February 22, 1987 at Bruce’s Thrill Hill Studio in Rumson, NJ, while he was recording the Tunnel of Love album. It was not included on the album, nor was it performed live at the time. It was put into the set at the second Christic Institute Benefit show, on November 17, 1990. Bruce introduced it as, “a song about his mother,” and told a short story about mothers.
Five years later, the song is put back in the set on December 17, 1995 at the Beacon Theater in New York City and played sporadically for the rest of the tour.
The studio recording was released on Tracks, November 10, 1998. Once again, the song is in the set for the 2003 Holiday shows. It’s played each night, December 5, 7 and 8, 2003 at Convention Hall in Asbury Park, NJ. This time Bruce sits at the piano for a beautiful new arrangement of the song.
In 2005, it’s only played twice, on May 19 and 27, in East Rutherford, NJ and London, England- respectively, again featuring Bruce at the grand piano. It was rehearsed at least one time in 2006.
